- Finished installing the new Campus Software License Grant on the VAXes.
- Investigated a software licensing problem on the VAX that Bob has for the
Parkfield project.
- The lab had some problems over the holiday weekend with a hacker who
gained access to some of the unix machines. In response to this, we
requested all VAX users to change their passwords, since the intruders were
monitoring network traffic and could have captured passwords off the net.
- Talked to Bob and Doug about restricting incoming rlogin access to the
VAX systems.
- Wrote some utility programs to monitor network logins and account
activity.
- Did some investigation to find the sources of some network logins.
- Did some routine cleanup on the BIGONE system disk.
- Created an account for Paul Okubo from Hawaii Volcano Observatory so that
he and Bob can trade some files.
- Attended the USGS staff meeting and the Timers meeting.
- Riley discovered a problem with the new campus software licences on
Monday night. Apparently, the systems all cache the license database in
memory, so even though I had installed the new licenses clusterwide, some
of the nodes still had the old licenses in memory. I ended up coming in on
Monday night and reloading all the licenses in memory to clear the problem.
- Installed Multinet on the Haliburton MicroVAX that Bob has for the
Parkfield project.
- Investigated a performance problem that Riley reported on LANDER. The
system was suffering from slow paging, since it was running out of physical
memory and having to write to its pagefile. Since the pagefile was located
on CAJON, the network transfers were slowing down the write operation. I
ended up having to defragment one of the disks on LANDER and move the
pagefile to the local disk when we rebooted CAJON and LANDER for monthly
maintenance.
- Worked out how to send DECwindows between VAX nodes using both DECnet and
TCP/IP as a transport. Also was able to import X windows from unix systems
to display on a VAXstation.
- Began fixing the ownership on the disks that had volume ownership other
than SYSTEM.
- Updated the Multinet installation on CAJON. The version that was on that
node was several versions old.
- Began investigating the use of the 9-track tape drives from BIGONE. This
is part of the effort to read approximately 300 old 9-track tapes that
contain data from January to June of 1983. This will fill a gap in the
data that is stored on line.
- Finished fixing the ownership on the disks that had volume ownership other
than SYSTEM.
- Tested the 9-track tape drives on BIGONE. The cables had to be hooked up
to get them to work. There were some problems. One of the drives worked
all right, but any commands for the second drive were executed on the first.
This is clearly not right.
- Took BIGONE down to remove the tape controller board to check the dip
switch settings and two reverse the positions of the tape controller and
terminal controller on the bus. This ended up killing both the tapes and
the terminal lines, resulting in having to reboot BIGONE again to put them
back in their original positions.
- Rebooted MOJAVE for its monthly maintenance.
- Worked with Steve and Nick to test reading events off of one of the old
9-track tapes. The software and tape drive worked all right, and Nick was
able to time events recovered off the tape.
- Fixed up mail forwarding addresses in VMS mail. There were some user
accounts that invalid mail forwarding addresses set.
- Created accounts on BIGONE, MOJAVE, and CAJON for Daryl and Bill.
- Assisted Bob with the FDDI proposal memo.
- Wrote a procedure to monitor disk space, device status, and error counts.
It is set up to run automatically and page me when problems are detected.
- Called DEC to get a revised quote for the Alpha workstation.
- Called DEC to inquire about the status of our hardware maintenance
contract on the 4000 (BIGONE).
- Wrote to Bob Logan at CCO to get the VAX/VMS 6.1 software distribution.
This is for upgrading TEJON to the new version of VMS so that it can begin
testing as an on-line system.
- Attended one USGS staff meeting and the weekly Timers meeting.
- Traded my pager for a CUBE 1 pager so that I can get Phil's Terrascope
pages, as well as the second pages that Isaiah sends out along with event
notifications.
- They painted my office this week.
- Got the CD distribution for VMS 6.1 and started reading the installation
and upgrade manual in preparation for doing this on TEJON.
- Followed up with DEC and Caltech to get the hardware maintenance contract
on the 4000 (BIGONE) renewed.
- Talked with Bob Logan at CCO about the possibility of getting access to
the GPS gateway router now that CCO will be managing it.
- Continued adding features to my program to check the free space, error,
and mount status of the disks on the system.
- Investigated a report by Kate that she was having problems with TIMIT on
AVALON hanging.
- Set up an account for Kate on the Alpha machine in Bob's office.
- Did some cleanup on the system and user disks on BIGONE to recover some
free space.
- Attended an ISDN presentation and demo.
- Attended the weekly Timers meeting.
- My office still smells like fresh paint.
- Monthly highlights for June, 1995

- Investigated a performance problem that Riley reported on LANDER. The
system was suffering from slow paging, since it was running out of physical

disk, and Riley reports significantly better performance.
