- Began trying to recover the squirrel tape data recording of the M8.1
Chile event that was partially overwritten by system glitches over the
weekend.
- Got a SLIP connection working between TEJON and HLBRTN. This is the
prototype for Bob's planned new setup at Parkfield.
- Got a new, revised quote for a pair of new disks from r-squared.
- Continued trying different ways of reading the squirrel tape with the
Chile event on it. It is looking like this may be impossible with the
equipment we have here. I contacted two commercial data recovery services
and got estimates of about $700-$2500 to recover the data on the tape.
- Did some routine cleanup on the BIGONE system disk.
- Investigated some disk errors that occurred during the week. These were
not serious problems.
- Continued to experiment with SLIP connections to the VAX.
- Defragmented the MEM02 disk on Mecca. This allowed for placing local
page and swap files on that disk, which should improve performance on Mecca.
- Discovered that the Ethermon network monitoring software on Tejon does
not work under the new version of VMS. I moved it to Bigone, as well as
investigating how to fix it on Tejon.
- Assisted Phil with his router configuration for connecting the 63-subnet
Ethernet to the frame relay network.
- Continued to experiment with SLIP connections to the VAX.
- Investigated complaints from the Timers that the VAXes were running slow
on Thursday afternoon. This turned out to have been caused by Riley
running backups during the day, which puts a heavy load on the network.
- Bigone crashed during a network load peak on Thursday afternoon. This
may have been caused by the network traffic monitoring software we were
running at the time. The system was brought back up after a few minutes,
and data acquisition was not affected.
- Fortunately, all these system problems were resolved by 3:39PM on
Thursday.
- Went through the USER disk to find files that were associated with
deleted accounts in order to recover some space on the disk. In addition,
I found some space in existing accounts by talking nicely to some users who
had forgotten large files in their directories.
- Cleaned up some unused old files on the system disk on BIGONE.
- One of the disabled accounts was still receiving mail, which was using up
several thousand blocks on the disk. I disabled mail delivery to this
account to prevent it from eating up more space in the future until either
the user returns to work here or is deleted.
- Attended the USGS staff meeting and the weekly Timers meeting.
- Investigated a problem with global memory sections on LANDER that were
marked 'delete pending'. It looks as if these are left over from when
DECwindows died on this workstation last Friday. Bob wants to reboot
LANDER when he finishes with doing subnet reconfigurations, so this will
clear these sections from memory.
- Continued attempts to read the squirrel tape from the Chile event.
- Assisted users with various problems involving printing, terminal access,
and terminal server problems.
- Diagnosed the problem that caused ISAIAH to die when the disk it was
writing to became overly fragmented.
- Got a VAX-to-VAX SLIP connection to work. This was an experiment to see
if this could be used for communications with the systems in Parkfield.
- Attempted to find a way of reading the Squirrel tape with the 8.1 Chile
event on it. It appears that our only hope of reading this event would be
to use a commercial data recovery service.
- Fixed the Ethermon network monitoring software that stopped working with
the VMS 6.1 upgrade.
- Cleaned up the system and user disks to recover a good deal of space.
