- Tejon was hung on Monday morning, so I rebooted it to clear the problem.
- Created accounts on Tejon for Nick and Debbie to use in monitoring the
on-line system.
- Created a new account on the main cluster for a new timer.
- Experienced a problem with the system disk on Tejon. The system crashed
and would not reboot. The error said that the system files were too
fragmented to allow the system to come up. We cleared the problem by
mounting the disk on another machine and doing a full backup and restore on
it to restore the file structure.
- Built a VMS version 6.1 system disk on a spare disk for emergency use in
the future.
- Installed a new version of the FORTRAN compiler on Tejon for Bob and
Allan to use in their CUSP development.
- Got a copy of a program from Scripps to set up Tejon to receive Anza data
over the Internet.
- Prepared to install an updated version of GKS on Tejon for CUSP
development.
- Read up on DECnet/OSI installation procedures.
- Got a newer set of VMS layered products software CDs from Caltech CCO.
- Ran the defragmenter on the Cajon hot disk.
- Bigone crashed at the end of the day on Monday. It appeared to be a
hardware problem. We logged a service call with DEC. When they came out
on Tuesday, they said it was a software problem. After several attempts at
restoring the system disk from backups, Bob tracked the problem down to a
bad connection on the cable to the system console. The fiber optic cable
installers who had been working in the computer room had pulled on the
wire, which made the console connection unstable. When the connection went
bad it caused the system to crash. Bob fixed the cable and all systems
were operational again by Tuesday afternoon.
- The remainder of the week was spent on furlough.
- Hooked up a LAT terminal server in Bob's office with a modem so that he
can dial in from home and connect directly to our network.
- Ran the defragmenter on the Quick disk on Cajon.
- Installed the updated version of GKS on Tejon.
***
- Worked through two major system problems on Tejon and Bigone.
- Installed updated versions of FORTRAN and GKS for use in CUSP development.
- Continued running the defragmenter on the on-line system disks in order
to prevent new occurances of old problems.
- Assisted users with using the new large-format plotter in preparation for
AGU.
