- Traveled to Menlo Park with Bob to assist them with their VMS 6.2 upgrade.
July, 1996 highlights:
- Upgraded the Tejon/Carizo VMS cluster to version 6.2.
- Assisted with the Menlo Park cluster 6.2 upgrade.
- Installed UCX on Tejon and Carizo to replace Multinet.
- Arranged for repair of a laser printer, a monitor, and a tape drive.
- Began preparations for upgrading the main cluster to VMS 6.2.
- Called HP to get information on getting our DDS-2 DAT drive repaired.
Was referred to Dallas Digital, who quoted $450 to fix the drive. Gave the
drive to Steve Bryant. Steve will handle the actual repair arrangements.
- Hooked up a 10Base-T hub to our data switch for Phil and assigned him a
set of three IP addresses on our subnet for his machines.
- Got the monitor for Lander back from CCO. After putting it back on the
machine it was evident that whatever they did did not really fix the
problem.
- Looked up information about UCX configuration options so that our UCX
setup will match the current Multinet setup.
- Assisted some users in Menlo Park with a printing problem.
- Investigated why the PSIMAGEN print queue is hung. It turns out that
this printer is dead until they get a driver for the system that replaced
Earth. Created a print queue to point to another printer in S. Mudd as a
workaround.
- Finished planning the main cluster VMS upgrade. This will begin next
week.
- The fan in MKA300: on Tejon is going bad. We will swap it out for a
different drive on Monday.
- Swapped MKA300: on Tejon, but the replacement drive did not work. Marvac
Dow did not have a replacement fan for the bad one, but Radio Shack did.
Replaced the fan and put the original drive back on Tejon.
- Cleaned up the User disk by deleting the contents of a number of accounts
that had been inactive for more than a year.
- The Quick disk on Cajon was getting full. This turned out to be caused
by the Logain log files, which were taking up 2/3 of the disk. Jim will
clean this up.
- Upgraded VMS on Bigone to version 5.5-2.
- Upgraded Cajon to version 5.5-2. When this was brought up on the system,
we were unable to start the online system due to problems with the updated
queue manager on Bigone. After some fiddling, we decided to back down to
5.5-1 on Cajon for the time being.
- Doug found his notes from 1992 about the modifications that were done to
the Bigone queue manager. This cleared up the problems.
- Began work on building a new V6.2 system disk for Bbear and on upgrading
a copy of Cajon's system disk to 6.2. When these disks are done, both
systems will be upgraded in tandem.
- Began work on the main cluster VMS upgrade.
