- Continued fire fighting in the aftermath of the VMS upgrade.
- Installed an operating system patch on Bigone to deal with a bug in the
queue manager that caused one of its data files to grow excessively and
consume disk space.
- Set Tejon so that outgoing alarm email will have a return address
pointing back to Bigone. This will prevent automatic mail replies from
going to the on-line system.
- Set up NFS between Tejon and Bigone for use by the Cull process. This
worked for a while and then died. We are investigating this problem.
- Rebooted Bigone and its satellites to finish installing the queue manager
patch and to adjust system tuning parameters.
- Found the problem with Cull and NFS. The NFS server is not closing
channels to phantom files on Tejon. After a time, the server process
crashes when it exceeds the allowed number of open file channels. We are
investigating what can be done to correct this.
- Kate could not log on to her workstation. Allan was able to fix this by
removing some logical definitions from her login.com file.
- There was a problem with the SCEC jukebox disks that are NFS mounted on
Bigone. UCX NFS works differently from the Multinet NFS that we used
before.
- Fixed a problem with anonymous FTP access to Bigone for Menlo Park. This
is another thing that was broken by the upgrade.
- Installed UCX version 4.0 on Bbear so that Cull can run there. Also this
was to test the theory that our problems with NFS were caused by
incompatibility between UCX 3.3 and 4.0. This turned out not to be the
case, as the problem is still occurring. We are continuing to investigate.
- Changed the NFS parameters for mounting the scec jukebox to fix a problem
that Katrin reported.
- One of the tape drives that Tejon used for Squirrel failed. We swapped
it for the drive that was on Malibu. The failed drive worked for nightly
backups when it was put back on Malibu. It seems to have some mechanical
problems, but backup is less time-sensitive than Squirrel, so the drive
was able to work.
- Attended the GPS computer users meeting.
- Fixed an automated FTP script for Fred Klein in Menlo Park.
- Installed the new HP JetDirect ethernet print server for testing. Got it
configured and did some test printing with it.
- Dave Wald's new workstation has been having apparent network problems.
These problems seem to be connected in some way to either the network or
the electrical system in the Tan house. Testing is continuing.
- Rebuilt the UCX POP server for Eudora mail. The old server had been
dying from time to time. Installing an updated C compiler and rebuilding
the server executable seemed to fix the problem.
- Traced the 'insufficient dynamic memory' error message to a system
tuning parameter that needed to be increased. Rebooted Bigone and
satellites to adjust this.

- The major problems arising from the system upgrade seem to have been
fixed now.
