- Set up another LAT server port for Steve to use as a dialout for paging
in case of packet radio failure.
- Helped Steve to pick a spot for the new RAID that will be installed on
Spring.
- Set up a demonstration of the new proposed development environment on
sylmar.
- Installed Perl and gcc on flint.
- Got the new Sun compilers from Lauren. Also got the new license file to
go with them.
- Installed gcc and Sun compilers on iron.
- Repartitioned the disk on flint to allow for room to install the new
compilers.
- Upgraded nickel to Solaris 2.6 and set it up as a client of iron.
- Set up tin as an iron client.
- Installed ssh on tin, iron, and nickel.
- There were some problems installing the new license file which turned out
to have been caused by the fact that the mail message with the licenses had
wrapped some long lines. The line fragments then caused the license
installation tool to choke. Unwrapping the lines fixed the problem.
- Turned on the new USGS web server and had the pointers changed to make it
live. Also, created accounts on it for people in the office.
- Bob and Sue brought back the computer that they used in Mammoth. It had
to be set up to work on our network.
- Created an account for Karen Kahler.
- Added access restrictions on the USGS internal web page.
- Installed the new Sun software licenses on the rest of the machines.
- There was a problem on Wednesday night with iron. This turned out to
have been caused by a test script that I had run which went berserk and
overwrote the /etc/inet/hosts file with a blank. The machine was running,
but didn't know its own identity. Replacing the hosts file fixed it.
- Created a Cshrc.tcsh file in /opt/util/bin on iron. This can be sourced
in individual account's .cshrc files to get a more consistent environment.
- We got a new used computer to replace Malibu, as well as two refurbished
color monitors.
- Set up a crontab entry to rotate the web server log files on the USGS web
server.
- Investigated an attempted break-in on the USGS web server and one other
web server in the office.
- Phil and Patrick reported a problem with linking programs under the new
compilers. This turned out to be because Sun moved some of the math
functions in the run-time libraries to a new library. Adding -lsunmath to
the link options fixed it.
- Set up boron and onyx as iron clients.
- Moved the rtdev directory tree off of spring and on to iron. This is
/export/home/rtdev on iron, and automounts as /rtdev/dsw on clients.
- Spent about two hours swapping the system disk on Bbear after it crashed
on Sunday morning. The SCSI bus on Bbear has been flaky for some time now,
and it is not clear at all why. In an attempt to isolate the problem, we
switched the CPU boxes between Lander and Bbear to see if the problem
follows the computer or the disks.
- Spent some more time refining the access control on the internal office
web page. Also created a dummy internal page that will come up for anyone
who is not authorized.
- Set up the statistics package on the USGS web server. Reports are
generated automatically every six hours.
- Created some backup tapes for Bob and Allan to take along to Hawaii.
- Malibu has crashed twice, which may be a symptom of hardware problems in
the new used machine.
- Got a new case for the external disk on flint. The old case had fan
problems that led to the disk running very hot.
- Figured out how to use the `at' command to set up backups to run at night.
- Looked at a problem that Allan reported with compiling earthworm on iron.
