- The USGS web server failed to restart after rotating its log files on
Monday morning. This seems to happen about once every two or three weeks.
As a stopgap, the crontab was changed to only rotate the log files once a
week, rather than every day.
- Allan's machine fell off the net after its wire was broken by some of the
furniture moving activity in Peggy Johnson's new office.
- Set up dummy pages to fill in the missing links on the Trinet home page.
- Assisted a user with resolving difficulties with the Trinet web server.
- Got a demo copy of wusage 5.0 for generating statistics on flint. This
will allow us to turn off DNS lookups in the apache server, which should
improve response somewhat.
- Set up ntpdate to sync the clocks on sylmar, flint, and ehzsouth with the
clock on iron.
- Fixed some bugs in the Trinet earthquake reports update script.
- Set up NTP on the VAXen. Also assisted Wil Tanigawa at HVO with setting
this up on his system.
- Sent the failed disk from Wwolf back to DEC for replacement.

- Upgraded Apache on Flint to 1.2.6. Also installed the 100Mb ethernet
card and the new SIMMS for a total of 320MB.
- Fixed a bug in the LOGIN.COM for the SPIGOT account on Bigone. The
problem was apparently a typo made during the last modifications to the
file.
- Had to reconfigure Sue's PC ethernet card for the new network, which
involved having to download a setup program from the 3Com website to set
the card to use the 10base-T port.
- Added a link on the Trinet earthquake reports page to point to the
archive of previous weekly reports.
- Created another server on the Netra to server the SCIGN pages. The local
name scign-south.gps.caltech.edu//131.215.66.188 was assigned to this server.
- Per Lisa's request, removed the TriNet headers from the automatically
generated HTML on the earthquake reports pages.
- Advised Larry Watanabe about which cables would be needed to hook the
Catalyst 5000 in the Yellow House up to the FDDI ring.
- Put more machines on the new network wiring in the two houses.

House.
- Installed UCX ECO 9 patch on Wwolf.
- The tape drive on Mecca was logging errors, so I removed it and the tape
drive on Malibu that had also been logging errors.
- Assisted the GPS group by figuring out the problem they were having with
Red Hat Linux networking on their new machine.
- Figured out the FDDI hookup for the Catalyst 5000 building switch in the
Yellow House. Relayed the cable requirements to Larry Watanabe, who will
order the cables.
- Faxed the purchase paperwork from Wwolf to DEC so that they will replace
the failed disk drive.
- Finished hooking up the machines in the houses to the new wiring.
- Booted up Sol1 to use in testing the tape drives from Mecca, and Malibu.
These drives and one other suspected bad drive turned out to all work
properly, so they will be returned to service. A fourth drive gave parity
errors, so it appears to be truly dead.
- Returned the Solaris CDs to Lauren.

dialup server and for the ETS LAT server.

flint.

- Hooked up the computers in both USGS houses to the new network wiring.
- Got a warranty replacement for the failed disk drive on Wwolf.
