- Arnie had some problems with his new network connections. This turned
out to be small misunderstanding on his part of how the new network wiring
was set up.
- Linda's printer developed an "error 51". A net search showed that this
is a fault with the laser unit, along with instructions for reseating the
connections to the laser, which is apparently a common mode of failure.
Doing this did not fix the problem, nor did swapping the laser unit with
one from another old printer.
- Set up password access for my documentation web page to allow access from
outside the seismo lab with a proper username and password.
- Got authorization and an account number from Egill to renew the software
licenses on the VMS machines.
- Monitoring the thickwire ethernet segment of the 66 subnet showed excess
traffic between Granite and Jet. Talked to Phil about a reconfiguation to
isolate this traffic on a separate segment off of the Decswitch. This was
implemented on Wednesday.
- Got and built a copy of Majordomo for experimental use on ehzsouth as a
list server to replace the use of smtp distribution lists on the online
systems.
- The CCO campus nameservers were dead on Wednesday morning, which caused
major problems for network access outside of the lab.
- Experimented with setting up a cgi script to do web-based updates of
Kate's earthquake commentary.
- Made some modifications to the commentary update script so that Kate can
include local hrefs in the text file. The script isolates the local hrefs
and then looks for and copies the necessary files to the proper directories.
- Talked to Ken about getting a UPS for the web server.
- There were some odd backups going on on Iron. This turned out to be Kimo
doing amanda backups on it. These were conflicting with the other system
backups.
- Reconfigured the 63 subnet to use an 8-port thickwire transceiver.
- Set up accounts and paging for Francesca DiLuccio.
- Configured a cisco 2500 SLIP router as eel3.
- Set up a procedure to automatically lock the ClearCase database before
backing up the directory tree.
- Got one of the old Cabletron hubs for use as the 63 subnet to connect Jet
and the telemetry routers.
- Wrote up configuration notes for the SLIP routers.
- Set up a 3-disk volume set to appear as a single disk on Mecca for Joe to
use in converting the Cedar data.
- Hooked the Catalyst 5000 in the yellow house up to the FDDI.
- Worked with Katrin to come up with a first approximation of how her new
equipment can fit in the telemetry room.
- There was a problem with ftp on the Netra. There were a number of zombie
ftp processes that had to be removed in order to allow access to the system
again.
- Arranged with ITS to set up a mail record for trinet.org in the caltech
dns so that lisa can get mail sent to webmgr@trinet.org.
- Talked to ITS to order a Java Workshop license for Doug.
- Dave Wald's monitor died. Got a loaner monitor from Phil while the
original is being replaced under Sun's RMA program.
- Phil noticed that jet was logging some ECC memory errors. The log files
showed that this had been happening for some time on one of the SIMMs.
Called Sun to arrange a service call. The came out and replaced the bad
SIMM on Wednesday.
- In the process of arranging the Sun service call, it turned out that we
do not have a maintenance agreement on jet. Called Sun to get a quote for
this service.
- This week was the nationwide satellite paging outage.
- Formatted a new 9GB disk for Sue to use.
- Made an account for Bob Taylor to use to take over some of Steve Bryant's
duties.
- Added an undo-last function to the Trinet earthquake commentary scripts
that Kate uses.
- Installed the new UPS for the USGS web server.
- Began researching an intermittent system hang problem on spring.
- Hooked the USGS web server up to the UPS.
- Got another of the old Cabletron hubs so that all of the VAXes in the
timers room can be on the same logical Ethernet segment. This will make
them less vulnerable to glitches in the network.
- Contacted Andataco to follow up on the problems we are having with spring
and the GigaRAID. Andataco recommended we install patch number 105222-01
from Sun.
- There was an apparent momentary network outage on Thursday morning, which
crashed two of the VAXstation satellites.
- Got notes on paging from Steve. Wrote these notes up and put them on the
documentation web page at http://sylmar.gps.caltech.edu/stan
- Assembled a new Ultra1 workstation for Peggy Johnson.
- In the process of researching Thursday's network problems, we discovered
the Carizo UDP multicast data packets on the main 66 subnet segment. This
turned out to be because the multicast packets are not being filtered by
the bridging software on the Catalyst 5000 in the yellow house.
***
- Got the web page update procedures working for Kate.
- Put the USGS web server on UPS backup power.
- Learned Cisco SLIP router configuration.
- Set up backups for the ClearCase VOB storage area.
- Reconfigured the Telemetry room Ethernet to isolate the VAX systems.
- Arranged a Sun service call to fix the jet memory errors.
