- ITS called back about the Java Workshop license. It turns out we can get
one free from Sun under the aegis of Caltech. Downloaded and installed the
license for Doug.
- Continued testing Spring and the RAID. At one point the /home disk file
system became damaged and it was necessary to use the clri command to clear
a corrupted inode from the disk before the system could reboot.
- Larry from ITS came over and we discussed the network plans for the USGS
houses.
- Wrote up Steve's paging notes for the documentation web site.
- Worked with Jeff Batten to test a new datalogger on one of the SLIP
routers.
- Bbear hung on Tuesday. It was necessary to power-cycle it to free it up.
- Got an FDDI traffic summary graph from ITS.
- Unpacked and started configuring one of the new Ultra-5 systems. Because
these systems use different disk drivers from the other Ultra systems, it
was necessary to boot and install them off the network using a Solaris
distribution that Kimo keeps on Kipuka.
- Installed another recommended Solaris patch on Spring.
- Got a new version of Netscape for Wwolf. Also added tcpip to the list of
transports allowed for the X server on Wwolf.
- Configured UCX tcpip transport on Avalon, Mecca and Malibu. This allows
these systems to import X windows from unix systems.
- Went to ITS with Bob to see examples of their network health reporting
capabilities. They will start automatically sending us reports about
traffic on our FDDI ring as seen by their Catalyst 5000 in the Yellow House.
- Ben from Andataco came out to upgrade the firmware on the GigaRAID.
- Tested the new Ultra-5 slated to replace iron.
- Began configuring the Ultra-5 that will replace Terra10.
- Installed an external disk drive for Peggy Johnson.
- Continued testing the new iron system. Allan got a license update for
DDTS so that it would work on the new hardware.
- There were two Northridge aftershocks on Wednesday. These occurred at
11:51. These were followed by a network outage from 13:50 to 15:30. These
events were not connected, but the network outage caused problems with
outside access to our web pages.
- Attended the TriNet seminar on Thursday.
- Got version 1.3.0 of Apache and installed it to test on sylmar.
- Marc from Andataco came out to perform some tests on the RAID.
- Installed Apache 1.3.0 and Perl 5.004_04 on the new Terra10.
- Put Apache 1.3.0 on Flint. This caused shake maps to break, so we fell
back to version 1.2.6.
- Several hackers have been trying to get into our web servers by looking
for the 'phf' script. This is a script that was distributed with early
versions of the NCSA server. In order to catch people doing this, I got a
Perl script to put in place of phf that logs who tries to access it, sends
them a warning, and send me mail to notify about the intrusion.
- Took a look at the old Terra10, which crashed about a week ago. The
crash turned out to have been caused by a disk fan that failed, causing the
disk to overheat. After allowing the disk to cool and removing the cover,
the disk came back. This allowed recovery of the old files from Terra10.
- Installed the new Terra10 in the rack in the Telemetry Room.
***
- Andataco came out twice to service the RAID in an attempt to fix the
problems we have been having.
- Installed the new Terra10 hardware and tested the new Iron hardware in
place.
- Started getting FDDI network traffic reports from ITS.
- Set up tcpip transport on Avalon, Mecca, and Malibu.
