- The automatic montly update for the Trinet earthquake reports web page
had a typo in it, due to a typo in the cron script. The fix for this
involved restoring the old page from backups and then re-running the update
by hand.
- ITS came out and tested the UPS on their network equipment in the tan
house.
- Moved the old aladdin system into Lucy's old office.
- Unpacked the two new Ultra-10 machines.
- Had some mail problems with duplicate messages that turned out to have
been caused by a bad address in a distribution list on the main gps mail
server. This caused the message to be resent many times.
- Bigone was subject to attack on Wednesday, and was used as a mail relay
host for sending electronic junk mail. The fix for this was to reconfigure
the UCX mailer to disallow mail relay, and to contact flash.net with the
log information so that the offender's account could be canceled.
- In order to prevent a similar spam relay attack on the unix machines,
Sendmail had to be upgraded to the latest version. This was done on the
Trinet development machines, the USGS web server, and on Jet.
- Flint, the Trinet web server, was attacked over the weekend and used to
relay spam email. This was fixed with a Sendmail upgrade on Monday
morning, along with the remainder of the unix machines.
- The new version of Sendmail had problems with the alias configuration
file. This turned out to have been caused by a change in the format of how
line continuation is handled.
- Andataco installed the new RAID system on Spring.
- Installed Solaris on Spring and reconfigured.
- Jet rebooted several times this week, due to power problems in the rack
where it is mounted. An analysis by the Campus electrician showed that the
equipment in the rack was drawing 17 amps through a power strip rated for
15. The rack had two power strips that were daisy-chained, so the problem
was fixed by reconfiguring them to connect to two different circuits. One
of the power strips had had its switch and ciruit breaker burned out by the
load, so this one was replaced.
- Repartitioned the main RAID system disk on Spring.
- Cleaned up log files on Flint in the wake of the spam relay attack.
- Got a quote from Sun for a replacement cooling fan for Spring.
- Upgraded the Netscape web server on ehzsouth.
- The circuit breaker on one of the Jet rack power strips tripped. Moving
the big Sun monitor off to a separate circuit reduced the load to prevent
this from happening again.

- Dealt with two spam relay attacks. Upgraded and reconfigured mail on all
systems to prevent this problem from happening again.
- Worked with the Electrical Shop people to diagnose and correct the power
problems in the Jet system rack.
