- Eric Schultz from Andataco came out and replaced the left-side controller
and the A-00 position disk in the GigaRAID-HA attached to Jet.
- Finished rebuilding Chalk, which is the AWARE display in the hallway on
the second floor.
- The A-00 disk on the Jet GigaRAID failed again on Tuesday. Replaced it
with one of our cold spares. Derek from Data General came out on Wednesday
with a replacement for it.
- Got Jet and Spring to talk to each other over the ethernet segment that
will be our WAN connection to DWP.
- Installed snort-1.2.1 on Ehzsouth. This is a packet sniffer and
intrusion detection system. It monitors traffic on the ethernet and
detects common network scans and attacks.
- Cleaned out the inetd.conf on Jet and Flint to reduce the number of
network services that the machines offer. This reduces the number of
network vulnerabilities on each machine.
- Installed a copy of nmap, which is used by hackers to scan machines for
vulnerabilities, and set it up to do internal security testing.
- Attempted to do the configuration on the Cisco 7204 router, which will
connect the Wan net to DWP. The configuration did not work as advertised
in the manual. Contacted Cisco. After several days, they found the answer.
The ethernet board in our router is not the type usually purchased with the
router, and the instructions for configuring it are not the same as on the
standard board.
- Contacted the author of the qpage package to ask about using qpage for
alphanumeric paging over a direct radio link. Got instructions on how to
set it up.
- Set up automatic archiving of messages sent the operators@iron with
station codes on their subject line. These are archived on a web page on
the internal Trinet web server.
- The GigaRAID-HA on Spring failed on Wednesday. One of the controllers
failed, and then the automatic failover to the other controller failed.
Derek from Data General came out on Thursday to replace the controller.
- Assisted Menlo Park with diagnosing a suspected breakin on their
computers.
- Derek from Data General came out to perform some failover testing on the
Jet RAID. In tests, the failover worked as advertised.
- The A-05 disk on the Jet RAID failed and was replaced with a cold spare.
- Did some research on Solaris system swap space issues for Jet and Spring.
Both systems have 4GB available for swap, but Solaris can only see a
maximum of 2GB. With 2GB of memory, this is insufficient. The solution
will be to cut the swap partition into two 2GB sections.
- Got an updated version of the snort intrusion detection program installed
on ehzsouth.
- Helped Stan Silverman in Menlo Park to install and configure secure shell
on two of their machines.

- The GigaRAID HA on Spring experienced a controller failure and one disk
failure. The RAID on Jet had a disk failure. Dealt with Andataco to get
them to fixed.
- Set up the automatic archiving of station update messages sent to the
operators mailing list on Iron.
