- Hooked up the SOPAC and AP modems to Jet for the move to the new alarming
system.
- Helped Patrick with QDDS issues for the new alarming system.
- Fixed the 'waveforms' links on the Simpson map to point to the new
Trinet waveforms page on ehzsouth.
- Added a password access option to the Pasadena internal web page for
people who are accessing it from home.
- Hooked up the Ehzsouth monitor and keyboard in Lisa's closet so that the
system will have a console available in case of system trouble.
- Did an inventory of files on the Pasadena web page to determine where all
the disk space had gone.
- Set up the MajorCool mailing list manager on the new mailing list server.
- The Squid server had a strange problem where any application of the 'ps'
command would hang. The system was otherwise running normally, and a
reboot cleared the problem.
- The SX RAID on Jet failed. Two of the three disks were offline and spun
down. The controller console was unable to spin them up or get them to
come online. Called nStor and talked to Bob. He scheduled a service call
and suggested that we power down the SX and reseat the DCP card as a test.
After doing this, all the disks spun up and the SX behaved normally.
- The SX RAID on Jet was still operating normally on Monday, so we postponed
the service call in order to observe it for a few days.
- Changed the node name of the new mailing list server to Eqinfo and moved
it upstairs to the stair landing in the Tan House.
- Set up the majordomo CGI program on Ehzsouth in order to allow for people
to subscribe to the new mailing lists from a web page.
- Set up two mailing lists on Eqinfo for the human-readable and
machine-readable earthquake messages.
- Tejon crashed on Friday night. After it came back up, we discovered that
the packet radio link to Anaheim was not working.
- Talked to John Coolidge and Ralph Anderson at the LA County Sheriff's
Office about the packet radio. They are amateur radio operators who
offered to help diagnose the problem.
- Menlo Park called about possible hacker activity on a machine on our
network. This turned out to be Jocelyn's PC.
- The SX RAID on Jet had not failed again since reseating the DCP card on
February 4th. As a result, we cancelled the service call. One issue
remained. A check of the disk status showed that only one of the three
disks was online. The SX on Spring showed two disks online and one standby.
Bringing a second disk online on Jet caused some problems. After talking
to Bob at nStor, it turned out that the second disk had to be rebuilt
before it could be brought online. This was done in the configuration
menu under Administration -> Start Rebuild. When this finished, he said to
go into Configuration -> Create Standby to designate the third disk as
standby. Finally, the system had to be shut down in order for the disks to
be quiet before the controller would save this configuration.
- Reinstalled the old versions of Sun Workshop on Willow so that our
current licenses will work with them. The machine came with newer versions
of the software that were not covered by our current site license. The
software license renewal was submitted on February 11th, so the new
licenses should be here soon.
- The GigaRAID AA on Spring had a disk failure. Disk 2/5 failed, and the
hot spare did not take over. Called nStor and got instructions to
physically swap the failed drive and the hot spare and then to manually
start the disk rebuild.
- We received a new disk from nStor, so this was placed in the Jet AA RAID
to act as a hot spare.
- Adapted a small C program to send output to the Associated Press and
Southern Pacific modems that are attached to a Lantronix terminal server.
This works by making a telnet-protocol socket connection to the server.
This will allow the modems connected to the terminal server to be addressed
by whichever system is primary at the time. This was necessary because the
serial ports on Jet never were able to successfully talk to these modems
over a direct connection.
- Assisted Dave Oppenheimer with setting up a paging web page for use in
Menlo Park.
- Attempted to swap hardware on system Granite. Put a new Ultra-10 machine
in place of the old Ultra-5. After rebooting, the system did not act
properly. It turned out to need a kernel patch to deal with processors
with clock speeds over 400 MHz. Put the Ultra-5 back.
***
- We had a major failure on the SX RAID on Jet. Talked with nStor tech
support to diagnose and recover from this problem.
- Dealt with one disk failure on the AA RAID on Spring.
- Set up the new mailing list server and software for managing the mailing
lists which will be used to distribute earthquake information.
