- Upgraded PHP to 4.2.2 after a vulnerability was published for the
previous version. The affected Bort, Agent86, and Horst. The new
version of PHP required setting 'register_globals=yes" in the php.ini
file. This is no longer the default setting.
- Fixed the hme devices on Craton to enable the network settings.
- VMS licenses expired on July 30. Got new licenses from Bob Logan.
- Set up Sq1ehznorth to replace Ehzmenlo.
- Disk 6 in the Arena RAID failed on Wednesday. Put in the spare and
sent the bad disk back to Maxtor with RMA# 0201030000.
- Installed ImageMagick on Dawn.
- The disk on Foreshock is failing. This is the same disk as the one
in Horst that recently failed. Doug will order a new ATA disk to
replace it.
- Network service on Agent86 was observed to be slow. It appeared to
be dropping packets. The fault was traced to the Linksys network
switch that the machine is plugged into. Cycled power on the switch
and everything started working properly again.
- Automated the retrieval and processing of the web server logs from
Akamai. Set up an area for each of the four web sites for the
statistics reports.

- Worked with Stan Silverman to switch the function of Ehznorth to
a new machine. This machine now serves the quake.wr.usgs.gov web
site, as well as www.sfbayquakes.org.
- Moved Avalon to the Timers' Room.
- Bigone disk was full again. Turned out to be the system accounting
file and the security.audit$journal files taking up all the room.
- Tried to move Hotspot to the rack where Jet used to live, but the
rack turned out to be too shallow.
- Fixed Joe's operator script. It was having trouble copying things
over the network to Pacific. The script had trouble with the system
name change.
- Ordered more memory for Ciim and Dawn to bring each one up to 1GB.
- Ordered a rackmount UPS for Ciim and Dawn.
- Fixed Big Brother's UPS monitoring. SNMP is blocked at the router
for subnet 66, so the monitor function had to be moved to another machine.
Moved it to Flint.
- Put a new disk in Fang to relieve the space shortage for the web
page directories.
- Got the replacement from Maxtor for the spare drive for the big
RAID on Pacific.
- The disk in Foreshock was failing, so it was replaced with a new
60GB IDE disk. Send the old disk, as well as the one from Horst,
back to IBM for replacement.
- The GREEN01 disk on BBEAR was logging errors. Set up a batch job
to copy it to GREEN05.
- Made Sqehzeast live for the Menlo Park web site.
- Vacation day on Friday.
- Disabled SMTP on Bigone to stop a storm of spam that was eating
the system.
- Fixed eqnews directory ownership on Horst and copied files for
usiaak event.
- Put Ciim and Dawn on the new UPS.
- Problem with log fetch script for the web server logs. The logic
for figuring out which logs had already been fetched was faulty.
- Got quotes for dual-Athlon machines from CalPC.
- Installed apcupsd on Dawn to monitor the UPS.
- The disk in Horst was failing, so Stan Silverman replaced it with a
spare.
- Got the replacements for the two bad SCSI disks back from IBM.
- Ordered plotter paper for the HP Designjet.
- Got the replacement memory DIMMs from Kinston. Installed them
in Ciim and Dawn.
- Moved the master copy of the Program web site to the Sqehzmenlo
server.
- Put the eqexperts database on Sqehzmenlo. Set up replication of
this database to Agent86 and Horst.
- Put a temperature and humidity monitor probe on the UPS for Ciim
and Dawn. Wrote a script to report to Big Brother.
- Installed patch 109326-09 on Iron. This is a security patch to
the BIND libraries on Solaris 8.
- Vacation days on Thursday and Friday.

- Moved the master server for the Earthquake Hazards Program web site to
a new server. Also moved the public web servers for the Northern
California Earthquake web site to a pair of new machines in Menlo Park
and Reston.
- Set up temperature and humidity monitoring with alarming capability
for the computer room in the USGS office.
